Healthy Apple Pie Recipe (No Refined Sugar Added)

Hello my hungry friends,

Ava got a new peeler last week and of course we wanted to try it out. And what better way to practice than by peeling apples for an apple pie?? As I spend more time with the oven during the fall seasons, I see myself making more pies haha!

But since our family has given up refined sugars, I wanted to know if there was another way to make a perfectly delicious pie without the cinnamon sugar we all love and enjoy. Well my friends there is without a doubt an alternative, and that is maple syrup. It’s still sweet, but it’s a much healthier alternative to refined sugar.

Healthy Apple Pie Recipe (No Refined Sugar Added)

    • Pie Crust (homemade | store bought)
    • 8 cups of Apples (I choose 2 or 3 varieties to enhance flavor) {cut into 1/2 inch wedges}
    • 1/2 cup Maple Syrup (make sure you’re not replacing processed sugar for even more processed sugar, get 100% maple syrup!)
    • 1/4 tsp salt
    • 2 tsp of Pumpkin Pie Spice (homemade | store bought)
    • 3 Tbsp of Orange Juice or Lemon Juice
    • 1/4 cup arrowroot starch or a non GMO corn starch
    • 2 tbsp of butter {cut into small cubes}
    • 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp of heavy cream or coconut cream
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°.
  2. Place your apples in a large bowl, add your maple syrup, salt, juice & thickener and mix together until apples are fully coated.
  3. Place your dough in a 9 inch pie plate and using your hand gently press around the edges to ensure there is no air between the dough and the plate.
  4. Add the apples & juice from your mixing bowl onto the pie plate.
  5. Add your butter to the top of the pie, spreading the cubes to make it nice and even.
  6. Now add your top crust and place in refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes.
  7. Cut vents on top crust if it's a full top crust, otherwise if latticed or already opened don't worry about it. This is just to help release the steam.
  8. Using a pastry brush, brush your egg wash onto the top crust.
  9. Place into oven for about 10-15 minutes then reduce heat to 375° and bake for 60-90 minutes.
  10. Remove from oven and set aside till cooled before slicing (this is very important to ensure that all your juices will set)

You can enjoy this pie as is or add a big delicious scoop of frozen coconut milk whipped cream! It’s almost like ice cream and its amazing!

    WOW! Made this pie a few days ago and just had to come back and let you know that it was DELICIOUS! A great substitute for the sugar, although I did add a bit of sugar on the top crust for crunch. Can’t wait to make this for Thanksgiving. 😉
