Homemade Lemon Coconut Sugar Scrub DIY {facial & body}

Jul 16, 2016 | Bath & Shower, Face Care, Natural Beauty & Cleaning

Namaste Crunchy Readers,

As a mom, I don’t really get to have a daily beauty routine like I once did. Some days I’m lucky to have brushed my hair before putting it in a ponytail or bun. But recently Ava has been interested in seeing the things we make be put to use besides cleaning with it! ha! My favorite item to make right now has got to be this Lemon Sugar Face Scrub! 1. Because its too easy & quick to make…. 2. Because I always have the supplies on me….and 3. Because it leaves my face feeling replenished and vibrant!

There are only 3 things you need for this scrub, 1 lemon, sugar, & coconut oil…thats it!

While sugar isn’t my favorite thing to add into my cooking, it is one ingredient I do enjoy using for scrubs. Sugar gently removes dead skin which makes it a great exfoliator for your face and body.

What better fruit than a lemon to add to this sugar scrub? Lemons are rich in vitamin C and citric acid – which helps to dissolve off any excess dead skin the sugar missed and helps to brighten your face over multiple uses (such as lighten dark spots and fade scars). The vitamin C in the lemons is a great antioxidant for boosting collagen production & clear your skin of free radicals. Lemons are also antibacterial & anti fungal which means that on top of all the other great benefits lemons give you, they also help to clear your skin of acne, blemishes, and other skin congestion….wow aren’t lemons just the bees knees??? (funny tangent story: I totally googled bees knees after typing it it & found out its a cocktail that actually contains lemons! haha)

One thing to remember if you plan on using lemon juice over multiple uses is that lemons along with other citrus fruits can make your skin more sensitive to our sun’s uv rays. I pair this scrub with coconut oil due to its antioxidant properties, which gives it the ability to block damaging effects of UV radiation and heal the skin. I personally use coconut oil as a natural sunscreen as well, but if you have sensitive skin I would pair this scrub with a stronger SPF rated oil, I suggest you add a bit of carrot seed EO to this scrub or add 1 part raspberry oil 1 part coconut oil.

A few other reasons why I chose coconut oil over the other oils is it helps to sooth irritation, contains vitamin E which helps to regenerate and protect the skin as well as softens and hydrates skin. Which makes Coconut oil a great moisturizer that is well absorbed by the skin.

Now before we start one thing you should know. This is a one time use scrub and should be use pretty soon after its been made.

Homemade Lemon Coconut Sugar Scrub

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lemon
  • 6 tbsp of granulated sugar (organic raw refined is always best)
  • 1 tbsp of coconut oil

METHOD

  1. Zest about 1/2 your lemon into a small bowl.
  2. Cut your lemon in half & squeeze as much juice from one of the halves into the above mentioned small bowl. You can use cheese cloth to help separate the seeds or if you’re a pulp fan like me, just pick out any seeds by hand/spoon.
  3. Next mix your sugar with your oil until it is nicely blended.
  4. Add your lemon juice & zest and mix well.
  5. Now you’re ready to gently massage this scrub onto your desired skin. Be sure to concentrate on areas that are more dull or flakey longer than other parts. Massage for about 2-3 minutes and then allow scrub to sit on skin for another 5 minutes to really do it’s magic.
  6. Rinse skin with warm water and pat dry with towel.

Be sure to snap a photo & hashtag #omlivin during or after making this recipe! I would love to know how it turned out for you!

Your skin should feel amazingly soft, refreshed, and moisturized! This recipe should be enough to use on your face & body, and like I mentioned earlier, you are going to want to use this scrub within the day of making it. I typically make it in evening wash my face with it before I go to bed and then use the rest in the morning when I take a shower! It’s a great way to wake up fresh!

I would have to say my favorite beauty routine would be salt baths! If I really get in the mood I even add fresh herbs to float around the tub. I can’t wait to try this scrub tonight, I have all the ingredients in my kitchen already!
