Third Eye Chakra & Child’s Pose (Balasana)

by | Apr 7, 2014 | Chakras, Yoga, Yoga & Meditation

Namaste Readers,

Today I look out my window and see life. Spring is here! I love the sound of neighborhood birds chirping and the vast amounts of greens all dripping from last night’s rain. I’m sure you can imagine me sitting at my kitchen table in the early hours with a nice hot cup of infused champagne oolong tea {yum}.

“Listen to your intuition. It will tell you everything you need to know.”

I am going to start our week off by continuing our Chakra series for this Meditation Monday. We have gone through our physical chakras and are now entering into the more spiritual chakras.

Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Weekly Asanas: Child’s Pose (Balasana):

The third eye or Ajna Chakra {meaning to know or to command} is our sixth energy center and is a very important chakra to have balanced, if you’re wanting to achieve higher consciousness that is.

Your third eye chakra is located in the middle of your forehead, slightly above your two physical eyes. Your third eye chakra is related to the color indigo and is associated with light and vision. When meditating you want to focus on “I See”.

Being that this chakra is where your pineal gland is located, we not only see what’s on the outside, but what’s on the inside as well. With a balanced Ajna chakra, we can see through the material world and feel a deeper connection with our inner wisdom and intuition. We allow ourself to guide us on our own path towards enlightenment and a higher self.

You will know when your chakra is blocked if you have self-doubt and distrust as well as daydream too often throughout the day, headaches, nightmares & visual problems.

For opening our Ajna chakra we want to do any pose that has a forward bend. By bending forward we block our physical eyes and trust our intuition to keep us balanced, focused and calm. You can also practice your yoga with your eyes closed to help as well. Today I chose child’s pose, a very simple and relaxing pose.

How to achieve Child’s Pose

Start with table pose {hands and knees on the floor} and lower your hips back towards your feet and sit on your calves {if possible}. Rest your head on the floor & close your eyes. Feel free to have your hands in front of your body or along side your body. Being that Balasana is a resting pose, we want to stay in this pose for about 30 seconds to 2 minutes. This pose is one of my favorite poses to do before bed, and if practiced on a regular basis can provide some very good benefits.

  • Stretches hips, thighs and ankles.
  • Relieve neck and back pain {when head & torso are supported}
  • Calms the mind and relieves stress, tension and fatigue
  • Enhances thigh muscles
  • Reduces heart rate
  • Promote cardiovascular recovery

If you are experiencing diarrhea, knee injury or are pregnant you might want to wait before you practice balasana. If you want to try this pose while pregnant, be sure to have a wider stance so your belly can fit comfortably. (See my prenatal yoga flow here for more details on child’s pose while pregnant)

Also since this pose puts pressure on your abdominals, I wouldn’t recommend doing this pose on a full stomach either. This is a great pose for beginners to start practicing their forward bends. Makes them conscious of their breathing and is helping them relax as well. While sitting in child’s pose focus on opening your third eye chakra and really beginning to see.
